Your smile is an important aspect of your personality. A good smile enhances your looks and image. And healthy, sparkling teeth make a good smile outstanding. But the reverse is true as well.

Good looking teeth may take more than brushing, flossing and visiting your dentist regularly. Especially as there are other things that can damage your teeth and gums and seriously underline an otherwise good smile. Here are 20 of the most notorious.

1. Sports Drinks
Though they may have their advantages and are quite popular, they are not good for your teeth. "Scientific research has found that the pH levels in many sports drinks could lead to tooth erosion due to their high concentration of acidic components, which could wear away at the tooth's enamel," says David F. Halpern, president of the Academy of General Dentistry , USA.

These drinks often high sugar levels, which act as food for bacteria that produce acid. The acids then ooze into the crevices of your teeth, creating deeper cavities and causing tooth decay.

2. Tap Water
Tap water contains fluoride, which is very good for teeth. According to Dr. Charles H. Perle, spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry, "Fluoride makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promoters remineralization, which aids in repairing early decay before damage is even visible." He goes on to say that studies have shown that the most potent source of fluoride is water fluoridation.

Today, bottled waters are all the rage because we think that it has very little germs. But most bottled water brands contain less fluoride than is needed for oral health if it at all. If a brand has fluoride, it will be listed as one of the ingredients on the label.

3. Diabetes
Diabetes weakens the body's immune system, … Read the rest

Your mouth is used for communicating with other people everyday which affects them whenever you talk with other people. If you are uncomfortable with your teeth, it will definitely show with the way you communicate with other people. If you still do not realize the importance of having pearly white teeth when you smile, then it's high time to concentrate on dental hygiene.

The first thing you can do to improve your dental hygiene is to practice regular brushing. This does not mean that you have to brush your teeth after every meal. For instance, suppose you eat an average of 8 times per day, brushing your teeth after each of those meals could lead to irritation of the enamel of the teeth as well as tender gums which can ever result to gum irritation or gingivitis. Brushing two or three times daily is sufficient to keep your teeth and mouth clean and is the recommended number of brushes by most dentists.

If you are not content with simply brushing only, you can also use dental floss after every meal or gargle with mouthwash. Just make sure that you know the proper way to use a floss or it could result in bleeding gums or sore areas between the teeth and tongue.

In addition, a glue cleaner is also worth considering if you think that brushing and flushing alone will not remove the bacteria that could cause halitosis in your mouth. This microorganism does not only thrive on the teeth but also on the tongue and cheeks of your mouth. To attain 100 percent fresh breath, it is important to clean your tongue and inner mouth cheeks likewise.

White tooth fillings are quickly replacing those ugly old silver or metal amalgam fillings of old – and little wonder.

Most people prefer tooth colored fillings so that when they speak or laugh they are not exposing a mouthful of dark fillings on their back teeth. That's the problem with silver fillings – they ever turn black.

Now, although white or composite fills have been around since the 1960s, it's only in recent years that they have become strong and durable enough to be placed in back teeth where most of the hard chewing is done. That's why dentists in the past preferred using amalgam fillings – they were incredibly strong and lasted for years.

However, those so-called metal fillings can also lead to cracked teeth over time because they expand. They also contain small amounts of mercury, which is quite toxic. Indeed, many dentists now will not use amalgam because of the mercury component.

White fillings are usually made of plastic and glass particles – they are mercury free and because they bond to the tooth they actually restore much of its original strength.

It's definitely a good idea to go with composites, though there are five things to take note of:

1) They take longer to place than amalgam and are thus more expensive.

2) They will last a long time, but not as long as metal fillings.

3) They require more care, including careful flossing and brushing.

4) They are honest to staining from tea and coffee. Strong alcoholic drinks – and mouthwash containing alcohol – can weakened the restoration.

5) If you have a tooth with a large amount of decay, your dentist may advise you to have a crown to strengthen it, rather than a composite that would not be strong enough.

A young woman came to my practice inquiring about using a whitening system to remove the tetracycline stains across the tops of her front teeth. Even though some people can experience a slight improvement through a whitening approach, a better option to treating tetracycline stains is to use Porcelain Veneers. By the use of porcelain veneers, we were able to restore her very beautiful smile.

In this article I will share my experience with several of my patients in using Porcelain Veneers to remove stains as well as correct various other defects, to get the perfect smile everyone describes.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are fine shells of ceramic material that are bonded to the front of a tooth. They are used to mask discolorations, brighten teeth, and to improve the smile. They are a greatorative choice for improving the appearance of your teeth.

When is a porcelain veneer restoration recommended?

  • As an alternative to crowns, to change tooth color, size, or shape.
  • For treating severe teeth discolorations. For example, teeth stained by tetracycline, by injury, and for masking discolored fillings in front teeth.
  • Alternative for certain Orthodontics. For example, when the front teeth are slightly misaligned, crooked, or rotated.
  • For the repair of old crowns and bridgework under certain specific situations.
  • For the elimination of gaps between teeth.

Can porcelain veneers get stained due to extended use – especially with the use of tea, coffee, red wine, or tobacco products?

A major advantage of using porcelain veneers as opposed to cosmetic dental bonding materials is that the porcelain veneer's surface is made of porcelain. Since porcelain is a type of ceramic, it is nonporous with non-fading permanent color. Here, a porcelain veneer's surface is extremely stain resistant.

Whiter teeth can do wonders for your smile and appearance, so it's no wonder that teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry options.

In addition to the discoloration caused by the build-up of surface stains acquired from using tobacco products and consuming certain foods or drinks, the average person's teeth are naturally shades of light grayish-yellow, and naturally become darker with age. Teeth whitening methods give everyone a chance to enjoy bright smiles that would otherwise not be available to them.

Not all treatments are suitable for everyone, so it is important to check with your dentist before deciding which tooth whitening option to go with. Some treatments use bleach while others do not, and not everyone's teeth are suited for bleaching.

Teeth whitening is ideal for people who have healthy gums and teeth, with no fillings. Teeth with yellow tones respond best to whitening.

Most bleaching products are peroxide-based. The peroxide is what actually bleaches your tooth enamel and makes your teeth whiter. The strength of the peroxide typically determines the strength of the whitening treatment. The percentages of peroxide currently found in teeth whitening products are 10%, 16%, and 22%.

Not all discolored teeth respond to bleaching treatments. For example, bleaching will not work for patients with root canal treatments, fillings, crowns and / or extremely dark stains on their front teeth. Only your dentist can tell you if your teeth and gums are healthy enough to go through a whitening process.

If your dentist has determined that you are a candidate to have your teeth whitened, you will need to decide which teeth whitening method to go with.

Your teeth-whitening options include teeth whitening toothpaste, over-the-counter whitening strips and gels, whitening rinses, tray-based tooth whiteners, and in-office whitening. These can take anywhere from a … Read the rest
